Most people feel low occasionally. Feeling sad is a normal reaction to things going wrong or being upsetting. When these feelings continue, or get in the way of your life, it can become a problem.
Depression is usually caused by a mixture of events, distressing things happening in your life, being under a lot of stress and not being well supported.
As well as making a person feel sad, depression can make other problems seem worse. Bacause they feel depressed, people may not feel like doing the things they usually enjoy, or they may not feel like doing anything. Other effects may be tearfulness, difficulty in concentrating, change of appetite and neglect of personal appearance.
